Thomas J. Stevenson

Some people leave behind a long list of accomplishments. Others leave behind something greater – a lifetime of memories, laughter, lessons and love.

Thomas Stevenson of Carrick/Pittsburgh passed away peacefully at the age of 73 on June 16, 2026 after a courageous battle with cancer leaving behind a family and community who loved him deeply.

Tom found joy in the things that mattered most. He wasn’t a man who measured life by titles and possessions but by family, loyalty and showing up for the people he loved. He never needed to be the center of attention.  To know Tom was to know kindness, loyalty and an easy-going spirit that put everyone around him at ease.  He had a gift for making life feel a little simpler.  Whether you were family, a lifelong friend, or someone who just met him you felt welcome in his presence.  Ask anyone who knew him and you’ll likely hear the same thing: “He was just a great guy.”

He believed deeply in God and carried his faith with him every day, not only by what he believed but in the way he treated others. His faith remained a source of strength through both life’s joys and challenges.

One of his passions was history. He could spend hours exploring the stories of the past and sharing them with others. From George Washington days to Carrick (Spiketown) and Pittsburgh from way back when to tracing back his own family’s history as far as he could go was truly something he enjoyed.

Music was also one of Tom’s greatest joys, especially bluegrass and country, but what made it special was his love of sharing it with others. There was rarely a happier sight than Tom playing music, sharing songs, and enjoying the simple pleasure of good company. Whether he was playing alongside his son Seth, entertaining neighbors with impromptu porch concerts, bringing smiles to nursing home residents, performing with cousins at family gatherings, entertaining back yard cookouts and open mic nights or even his dog Willie from his couch Tom’s music had a way of bringing people together. Some of his happiest moments were spent with an instrument in his hands and people he loved nearby.

Above all, Tom loved his family.  He will be deeply missed by his wife Sue Stevenson, daughter Melissa Stevenson (Jim Bittner), son Seth Stevenson and his dog Willie. He will be missed by his mother Teresa Stevenson, sister Jeannie Gitzen (Charlie Gitzen), nieces, nephews, and cousins.  He will also be missed by many other family, friends and neighbors. Though he is gone from our sight, the songs he played, the stories he shared and the love he gave will remain with us always. We were truly so lucky to have him in our lives.

Family and friends are invited to a funeral mass to honor Tom’s life on Wednesday, July 15, 2026 at 10:30am in St. Basil Church of Blessed Trinity Parish, 1735 Brownsville Rd Pittsburgh, PA 15210. 

Following a private family luncheon, friends and family are invited to join us at the Marasco Melrose Tavern, 2712 Brownsville Rd Pittsburgh PA 15227, beginning at 3:00 for a Celebration of Life as we gather to share stories memories, music and raise a glass in Tom’s honor.
