Rose Marie Kromka

Rose Kromka was born into a world that often rewarded selfishness and cruelty. Despite this, she was stunningly generous — in her love, her friendship, her humor, and, for those foolish enough to cross her, her electric sass and singular wit.

She died May 31, 2026 after a brief illness at the age of 71. The world is a smaller, less vibrant place without her.

The fifth of nine children to George and Margaret "Peg" Kromka, Rose lived much of her life in Westmoreland County. And for the last 15 years, she resided in Wendel, Pa. with Tom Palinski, whom she loved deeply for more than 30 years — and he, her.

Her children and grandchildren were her sun, moon, and stars. She is survived by her partner; and by brothers Jesse, David, and Steve Kromka and sisters Mary (Crisman) and Linn Kromka; her daughter, Christina Szejk, and grandchildren Buena Migo and Liam West-Szejk of Pittsburgh, Pa.; and her son, Joe Szejk, and his wife and children, Brandy, Sela and Soren of Omaha, Neb. Her mother and her sister Juanita (Galloway) preceded her in death.

Rose’s keen intelligence and incredible work ethic contributed to her long, productive career in the restaurant industry. And in her spare time, Rose was a font of creativity. She loved cooking, baking, gardening, and spitting at pictures of the Cheeto Pedo.

At her request, there are no services for Rose, but you may honor her memory by donating to a local progressive candidate of your choice or Humane Animal Rescue of Pittsburgh.
