Montgomery “Red” Yauger Jr., 67, of Mount Independence, PA, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, May 2, 2026, at UPMC Presbyterian Hospital. He was born on Wednesday, June 11, 1958. He was the son of the late Montgomery “Mont” Sr. and Lorna (Bryner) Yauger. Growing up in a large and lively household alongside his siblings.
Red developed a strong, lifelong work ethic as a mason. Red lived a full and vibrant life. He was a familiar face and fierce competitor in Bugsy’s Pool League, sharing great times with his friends. A true outdoorsman, Red found peace in nature. He loved hunting for deer and turkey with his daughter, Ashley, and extended family, fishing with his children and grandchildren, and foraging for ginseng and morels. He had a deep appreciation for wildlife, often spending time feeding and watering the deer and squirrels. He was also a talented craftsman who enjoyed woodworking, making beautiful custom spice racks, fiddles, canes, etc.
Above all, Red was a natural caretaker who cherished his loved ones. He was a supportive brother, devoted husband, loving father, proud grandfather, and great-grandfather. He leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and craftsmanship that will live on in his family and his beloved fur baby, Brownie.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife, Shirley; daughter, Malenia Gilpin; brothers, Ralph, Arnold, and Mark Yauger; and sisters, Patty (Scott) Bigley and Rita (Richard A. Sr.) Kazimer; aunts, Peggy Martin, Arlene Nicholson, and Maxine Maddas; and uncles, Howard “Huck” and Lester Yauger.
Red is survived by his loving daughter, Ashley; sisters, Teresa (Chuckie) Lowman and Jeanne (Charles) Blaniar; sister-in-law, Bessie Yauger; aunt, Diane Yauger; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and many adoring nieces, nephews, and cousins.
