Jonathan Hergert Obituary

CPT Jonathan Kurt Hergert, US Army, Ret., Vietnam War veteran, recipient of a Bronze Star medal (“V”, one oak leaf cluster) and a Purple Heart (two oak leaf clusters) passed away Tuesday February 10th 2026 after an extended illness with his beloved family by his side.

“Jon” was born in Wilkes Barre, PA and resided most of his life in Sewickley Hills. He enlisted and served bravely in the Vietnam War as an Army Ranger, 11th Pathfinder Company (Airborne,) 1st Calvary Division and was awarded many medals and commendations for his service. In 1972 he met and married the love of his life Mary Ann. Together they graduated from Florida Atlantic University, and Jon went on to graduate from Tulane Law School with honors. He was employed at Eckert Seamans Cherin and Mellott in Pittsburgh as an attorney, and later as a partner for over 40 years before retiring.

Jon is survived by his cherished wife of 54 years Mary Ann, his daughter Kimberly, son-in-law Adam (all of whom he loved more than anything), a brother-in-law, sister-in-law, many nieces and nephews, and many dear friends.

He loved traveling - especially to Ocean Isle Beach NC, cooking gourmet meals, a proper black and blue steak, reading very long books, the New York Times Sunday crossword puzzle, and many other things, but he most enjoyed spending time with the people he loved.

He was the best husband, father, guide and protector anyone could have ever asked for. We will deeply miss his calm presence, worldly wisdom, and sage advice. He was our lighthouse and we were his light - rest easy soldier, your duty is done.
