Janet Nogal Obituary

Age 84, of Brookline, formerly of Mount Oliver, passed away peacefully in her sleep the morning of January 4, 2024.  She is the daughter of the of the late Michael Kuran and Mary (Glod) Kuran. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Norman Nogal. She is survived by three children, Terri (Mark) Gillespie, Kimberly Nogal Obranovich, and Frank (Danielle) Nogal. Janet loved her family, especially her grandchildren:  Christina Gillespie, Stephanie Gillespie, Adam (Caley) Obranovich, Steve Obranovich, Lauren (Nick) Showman, Jessica (Corey) DeGennaro, and Matthew Obranovich. Her seven great grandchildren were the light of her life.  She took great joy in spending time with them in person and via Facetime.  Brady, Kylie, Avery, Liliana, Remi, Lukas and Parker now have a special Guardian Angel watching over them. Janet was predeceased by her sisters, Jean Face and Geraldine Ketter.  She is survived by her sisters Sherri Kuran, Kathy Kuran, Colleen Kuran Walkley, and Suzanne Kuran Plachta.  She is also survived by her dear cousin, Marlene Spanovich and her husband Richard. She also leaves behind many friends, including her good friend Lynnette (Ann) Kuchta, who was a tremendous help to the family in Janet’s final months.  She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

In her younger days, Janet was very involved with the Mother’s Club and Athletic Association at St. Joseph School.  Later in life, she devoted many hours to various food pantries and organizations that helped the hungry and homeless. In the 1970’s, Janet held a position of importance in Mount Oliver.  She was the weekend counter person at the Donut Delite Shop. This job was so important that when the weather was bad, the Mount Oliver Police would drive her to work to assure she arrived safely to get the coffee on. Janet spent many years as a custodian at St Joseph School.  She worked very hard and took very good care of the school.  She was a friend to all the students and teachers. Janet was quite the cook and was a prolific baker.  She especially loved to bake cookies.  Her husband Norman affectionately dubbed her, JJCookiebaker.   She made cookies for family parties, weddings, showers, and just because.
