James E. Diskin
April 3, 1947 – May 29, 2025

James E. Diskin (Jim), a decorated U.S, Navy veteran and lifelong public servant, passed away peacefully on May 29, 2025.  Born to the late Elizabeth A. Rooney-Diskin and Edward Diskin, Jim was raised in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and dedicated his life to service—first to his country, and then to his city.

Jim served honorably in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War as a Navy helicopter medic rescuing and saving his fellow soldiers. Following his military service, Jim joined the City of Pittsburgh Police Department, where he served with distinction for 34 years. Most of his career was spent in the Major Crimes Unit as a Homicide Detective. After retirement, Jim continued his career as a US Marshall. Jim’s sense of duty never wavered.

Jim is preceded in death by siblings, Michael Diskin, William Diskin, and Nancy Diskin-Datz (Harry) and is survived by his beloved sisters Katherine Pellegrini (Michael), Mary Diskin, Eileen Diskin-Etters, JoAnn Koral-Jenkins (Grant), and Kimberly Koral-Roell (Carl). Jim will remain forever in the hearts of his many nieces and nephews, his dear Aunt Kay and many cousins, as a legend adored and loved for his abundant generosity and sense of humor. 

Also survived by spouse, Roberta Diskin (Sterling) and his children, Koleen A. Diskin, James S. Diskin, Kelly A. Chirsan-Sorrick (Jeff), Kimberly Chirsan-Davis (Ralph), grandchildren, Kelsey Chirsan, Tyler Chirsan, Destiney Davis and Gabrielle Davis, Thomas Diskin and Henry Diskin and the Great Grandfather of Ariella Davis, Griffen, Salem and Eliza. 

Jim was admired by colleagues and loved by friends and family alike. He will be remembered for his service, unconditional generosity, strength, and captivating humor. His stories would attract and retain the attention of family, friends, and strangers alike. He was happiest when he was helping and giving to others. with no limits or conditions.     

Jim’s life was one defined by honor, service, and love. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered by those who had the privilege to know him. Rest in peace, James, your watch has ended, but your legacy lives on.

A Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, June 5, 2025 in St. Pius X Church, Saint Theresa of Kolkata Parish, 3040 Pioneer Avenue, 15226. Interment service with military honors to follow at 1:30 p.m. in The National Cemetery of the Alleghenies, 1158 Morgan Road, Bridgeville, PA 15017. 

The family of Jim would like to acknowledge our heartfelt appreciation to the VA Hospital H.J. Heinz Campus for their exceptional care of Jim.  The medical team and every employee at Heinz Campus treated Jim with consistent respect, dignity and provided him with the highest quality of care, compassion, and comfort.   Jim was loved by all who cared for him and his fellow veterans, who many proudly called him their “best friend.” His humor and “character” are already sorely missed by everyone who knew him there.  He will be remembered.
