Elizabeth Fertig Obituary

Betty Ann Fertig

February 3, 1945 - April 20, 2025

Elizabeth “Teddie”, “Betty” Fertig, of Monroeville, PA, loving wife of the late Elwin, beloved mother of Christina, the late Scott (surviving wife, Carolyn), and the late Todd Fertig (surviving wife, Michelle), grandmother to Ellis, Wyeth, and Finley, passed peacefully at home at the age of 80, on Easter Sunday, April 20th, 2025 after an all too-short battle with acute myeloblastic leukemia.

Teddie was born on the North Side of Pittsburgh to Elizabeth Pancoast and Fred Marshall and raised there by her mother and her Aunt Evelyn Haskins. She enjoyed summer camp trips growing up, developing a love for nature and animals and had a green thumb that enabled her to keep plants thriving. She had a great fashion sense and began sewing her own clothes at a young age and early on started a life-long love of crocheting and knitting. She was endlessly working on or thinking up the next design for home-made blankets, scarves, and sweaters-she loved to create unique patterns and work with others who shared her passion and then to gift her finished projects. Her passion and desire to look at how to create something new with a unique perspective was passed to her children who all pursued the creative arts in different forms, from reading and writing, painting and sculpture, and acting. Her compassion for others and encouragement to follow your dreams were things also passed down to her children and her grandchildren who were her absolute pride and joy.

Teddie spent many years in sales, working with Avon, Parklane Jewelry and then VitaGuard offering china, cookware, and cutlery. She later had a 20-year career with the Postal Service, retiring in 2023. After her retirement, Teddie enjoyed family vacations to Cape May, NJ and a Danube River Cruise, creating memories that will be forever treasured. Teddie was an avid reader and enjoyed attending author lectures with her daughter and was very excited to be named a character in a novel coming out this summer.

Teddie was a wonderful mother who gave love in abundance. Her favorite and best known thing to do was brag about her children’s and grandchildren’s successes and talents. She was a great story-teller and could recall with detail a multitude of funny stories that occurred throughout her life. Teddie was very intelligent and had quick wit, and her unconditional love was always apparent. She had a special energy about her and always had a smile for strangers. She listened intently and asked many questions so she could fully engage with people. She forged deep friendships with all whom she encountered – from international opponents on Words with Friends, to the special bond she created with the nurses who cared for her in her final days. She leaves a wide circle of wonderful, caring friends in addition to her family who miss her.

A memorial service will be held at All Saints Episcopal Church, 3577 McClure Ave, Pittsburgh, PA 15212 on Saturday, June 14th 2025 at 11:00 a.m. A reception to celebrate Teddie’s life will take place at the church after the service. All are welcome and encouraged to wear something colorful or sparkly to honor Teddie’s memory. In lieu of flowers, please consider memorial contributions to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, your local animal shelter, and/or consider a donation of blood or platelets. Arrangements entrusted to Ball Funeral Chapel, Inc.
