Dennis J. Sweet, son of the late James and Ollie Sweet, passed away Saturday, Oct. 16, 2021. Dennis was preceded in death by son Brendan Connor and is survived by sons Ian Townsend and Felix (Kaeleigh) Sweet. He will be fondly remembered by dear friend Jackie Bissell and missed by his partner in crime, his cat Violet.
Dennis was always an academic, a writer and a philosopher. He earned a PhD. in Philosophy and taught across the country at a number of prestigious colleges and universities, including Fordham University in New York. Most recently he had been teaching virtual online classes through Community College of Allegheny County.
Dennis was also a published author and had written numerous pieces, including a volume of poetry (Analects), a trilogy grounded in Irish mythology, an analytic text entitled Heraclitus and even a screen play based on The Waltons. In addition, he was a sought-after writer to pen introductions to, and analyses of, volumes of work by Kant, Nietzsche and a number of other historic philosophers. He loved The Andy Griffith Show, MST3K and Svengoolie, and he spent countless hours with his kids enjoying, then dissecting and analyzing, each episode. His thirst for knowledge also made him a threat in any competitive trivia. When he wasn't reading or writing, he could often be found strumming his bass guitar and softly singing.
The world is much dimmer today, and this profound loss of such a gentle and brilliant soul will be felt by many. He will be missed by family, friends and students, past and present.
