Charles Matheny Obituary

Charles Howard Matheny “Pops” went to be with his Lord and Savior on Tuesday, April 20, 2021 unexpectedly after a brief illness. We are unsure how to capture a person such as Charlie so please bare with us through this attempt.

Charlie was born on November 18, 1960 in Clarksburg WV, which no matter where he has traveled, he always was proud to talk about his hometown. He graduated from Emmanuel Christian School in 1979.

Charlie lived in several different states and worked many jobs though out his life. Absolutely one of the hardest working men you’d ever meet. When his father had a stroke and had to be placed in a nursing home, Charlie helped his mother, Faye Wolfe Matheny make bread to sell to the neighbors, mowed grass, and completed odd jobs to help provide for his mother. After her death, Charlie met and married the love of his life, Shanon Matheny who preceeded him in April 2015. He was a loving and attentive husband. The last 10 years of Shanon’s life, she needed total care which Charlie provided. He absolutely adored Shanon and was utterly lost when she passed. We know that he is reunited her and probably laughing at the hot mess we have become without them.

Charlie enjoyed lots of things in his life hunting, online gaming, Charlie had a great love of cooking and really enjoyed cooking for his family during the holidays.

He shared a love of WWE Wrestling with his grandchildren. Charlie was an avid Mountaineer and Steeler fan but his favorite sports to watch were the ones that his grandchildren were performing in, you would see him in the stands gleaming with pride. Most of all Charlie was devoted to his family and devoted many hours to making memories with his grandchildren. It didn’t matter if that entailed playing with barbies or running around the yard with nerf guns. As they have gotten older, Charlie learned to master the Xbox to continue to spend time with them. He was a great mentor to his grandchildren and would often start out by saying back in my day when talking about life lessons. He was their Hero patching up scraped up knees , providing homework help or making a special snack because they were having a bad day all with words of encouragement. Charlie would be the first to say I am proud of you.

Surviving & blessed enough to call Charlie Pops, David Hardy, & grandchildren Jackson Hardy, Ariel Hardy all of Phoenix, AZ ,

Kristen Thomas (Michael Beverage) who he lived with the many who called Charlie Papaw Tristan Vickarny,  Kolt Thomas, Kenny Thomas, Dionna Thomas, Kourtney Thomas, Tyler Chandler , Jared Beverage, Kaleb Thomas, Mackenzie Thomas, Emily Arbogast, Hannah Beverage, Kregg Thomas, Fletcher Beverage , Rosealee Beverage  and one Great Grandson which will no longer have him to act as a laundry service , personal chef , or their entrainment committee.

His poor dog Sugar Bear who will now have to eat kibble instead of the daily people food regiment he has grown fat, sassy, and accustomed too.

Also surviving was a special friend Cynthia Lynch who was able to provide Charlie with happiness again. He was so looking forward to his upcoming trip to Texas and having a future filled with new possibilities and adventure.

Charlie never met a stranger and could talk to anyone and did.

Charlie  would invite you in offer you a hot cup of coffee feed you a home cooked meal and give you a listening ear with no judgement he was one of the most genuine people you would ever encounter.

If you talked to him regularly, online we know you will be missing those conversations. We had no clue he had such an impact on so many people across the county and would like to thank you for the friendship you shared with him.

We would also like to thank the several Doctors, Nurses, and staff who worked extremely hard and provided excellent care not only to Charlie but our entire family we are grateful.

Besides his beautiful  wife Shanon he was Proceeded by his mother, A. Faye Wolfe Matheny and father, Charles Edgar Matheny , Saylor Hayes, and grandsons, Inman Thomas ,  & Joshua Pendleton

The family will host a dinner immediately following Charlie’s  service  however do not expect much as Charlie is not here to cook, we are taking baby steps learning to master the microwave.
