Abeid Allimayu Johnson
April 4, 1972 – April 12, 2025
Abeid Allimayu Johnson, lovingly known as “Bey,” was born to Clarence “Boots” and Clarice “Patty” Johnson, his name meaning “Leader in Honor of God.” He was baptized at St. Paul AME Church and grew up surrounded by music and faith. A talented singer, songwriter, and performer. His most notable composition was "I Choose you", a beautiful, timeless love.
Bey came from a musical lineage—his grandfather a jazz trombonist and his father a saxophonist. Inspired by groups like New Edition, Bey formed 24/7 Express, mentored by his “step-dad” Shane, and later Artistree, performing in venues such as the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
Bey’s life was marked by resilience. Diagnosed with end-stage renal disease in his youth, he underwent dialysis for years before receiving a life-saving kidney transplant on Christmas Day 2008, a miracle that came while his family was keeping vigil for his dying grandfather. Tragically, the next day, his grandfather passed, after Bey said he had a vision of him saying, “Squirrel, I’m brand new.”
Though his health battles continued, including heart failure and strokes, Bey’s spirit never dimmed. He remained hopeful, creative, and surrounded by love. He was a passionate graphic designer, avid sports fan, and deeply loved mentor, coach, and father figure. His wife, Dana, was his partner in love and life. He cherished his stepchildren and grandchildren, and deeply valued family, music, children, and cooking.
Bey is preceded in death by his grandparents and beloved aunt Shirley. He is survived by his devoted wife Dana; his parents Clarence and Clarice; “step-dad” Shane, siblings Shalaman (Michele), Ron (Jen), Tammy, and DJ; stepmother Wanda; many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends; and his treasured grandchildren.
A celebration of Bey’s life will be held on Saturday, May 17, 2025, at 1:00 PM at Riverview Park Activity Center, Northside.
Though we miss him deeply, we rejoice knowing he rests in God’s peace. He will be remembered as a man who loved deeply, lived creatively, and kept faith through it all. Amen.
